What: Fasten allows you to taxi passengers around for pay, like Uber and Lyft, but takes far less of your pay for each ride

Expected pay: $10 – $15 per hour

Husl $core: $$$

Where: Austin and Boston

  • You must be 21 or over;
  • have a valid driver’s license for at least a year;
  • auto insurance;
  • a 2005 or newer 4-door vehicle that can seat 5 – 7 people, including the driver;
  • have a working air conditioning system in your car;
  • keep your car clean, inside and out;
  • and have a dashboard mount for your smart phone and a smart phone.

Fasten works much like Uber and Lyft. But is only available in two cities and is unlikely to have the number of rides as the better known apps. The good news? It promises to keep just $1 per ride, which allows you to keep way more of each fare.

Still, until the app becomes better known, its probably best to sign up for more than one driving service, if you sign on. The other catch that may be a deal-breaker is that you don’t know where you are going when you pick up your fare, and you don’t know how much you are going to make until the ride is over, according to Fasten support. That’s how it works when you operate a taxi too, of course.  But that’s not a lot of certainty for someone who is doing a side hustle and can choose from a lot of different options.

If you aim to drive for a living, consider better-known apps, including Lyft, Ride Zum, Wingz and Uber. If you have a truck and are willing to drive it around to help people move, check out Truxx, Hitch It, and GoShare, which all offer relatively high hourly pay.

What the drivers say:

“I had an incident where I had a rider vomit in my car. It took two days to get an appointment to get my vehicle’s interior decontaminated and cleaned. I lost wages due to this. I submitted a claim to Fasten as requested, even included numerous pictures and a copy of the cleaning bill. They only paid me for 58% of what was origally claimed. They wouldn’t even cover the full cost of the interior detail.”

“Recently picked up somebody from downtown, took past a major freeway, up some long hilly roads…about 20 min (40 min round trip)…for $10…What a joke… Next time just spit in my face instead.”
