What is Preply?
Preply is an online tutoring site that expects tutors to provide many lessons for free. It also charges high commissions when tutors actually do get paid.

How it works
To sign up here, you simply need to fill out a profile, upload a photo and a two minute video describing your tutoring skills. You do not need tutoring experience or certifications.
You’ll then fill out a schedule of your availability, which boils down to what times you are willing to schedule lessons each week. Your availability is not easily changed from week to week.
You set your own rates here. But before you set your rates, be aware of the site’s high commissions — ranging from 100% – 18% of your pay. (see below)
When you’ve completed the sign up process, the site will start booking students for your lessons.
Preply Review:
Online tutoring jobs are usually pretty great. The jobs provided by Preply are the exception to this rule.
There are a host of reasons why. First, and foremost is that the site demands that tutors provide their first session with each and every new student for free. The session is not free to the student, mind you. Preply simply takes 100% commission on those first sessions.
That’s a great deal for Preply and a miserable deal for you.
After that, you pay a 33% commission on each lesson. Eventually, the site’s commission drops to a more reasonable 18%. However, if you last that long, you’re a glutton for abuse. After all, 10 new students means you work for 10 hours for free. No other tutoring platform asks for this kind of limitless freebie.
You also have a limited control over your schedule. The site will schedule students into your “available” time slots, without your approval. If you failed to adjust your calendar for some other commitment, you have to figure out a way to reschedule the session.
Worse, users complain that the platform itself is unstable, forcing tutors to go off-platform to complete their sessions after a site crash. Whether or not you get paid when going offsite is another question.
Bright side
The site accepts tutors for more than 100 subjects and you don’t need credentials. That’s all the good news we’ve got.
Payment
Once a student marks your session as “confirmed,” Preply will transfer any pay you’re due to your Preply account. To cash out, you click on the “withdraw money” icon and choose whether you want to be paid through Wise, PayPal, Payoneer or Skrill.

Fortunately, jobs in tutoring are plentiful. And most of them offer decent pay and excellent working conditions.

We also recommend Outschool, an online teaching platform where you design the curriculum. Although each class must be approved by the site, they’re looking for appropriateness for the age group, not whether you follow a set curriculum.
