Review:
Child Care Careers is really a temp agency for teachers and teacher’s aides. They are looking for people with Early Education experience and training. Pay varies based on your position — i.e. substitute teacher or aide — but you should always expect to be paid more than minimum wage in your state.
Significantly, if you happen to work more than 30 hours in a week over the course of a 12-month period, you are qualified to receive some benefits, including group medical and dental insurance.
Signing up does not guarantee a job, however. The agency calls you when they have a position. And that can be at short notice, if, for example, another teacher calls in sick.
Other sites worth checking out Care.com and Urban Sitter.
What their users say:
“I had limited experience with the young age group, but I had a Master’s and only qualified for $8.00 as an assistant. But I did enjoy working with the Pre-K children, especially the opportunity to work with the children of Mayo Clinic employee’s at Bright Horizons. I also had the opportunity for diverse environments in how to evaluate children for safety and abuse at home. I liked that they called in the morning to offer you a position, and emailed a map and information. And I liked that you were able to give them a schedule of what days and times you were available.
“A typical day at work would involve proving assistance to classroom teachers and supervision of preschool children. This job provides a entry level opportunity into the childcare field.”
“You have to wake up extra early and respond often, and its no guarantee to get an assignment. That being said, I’ve learned diligence and punctuality. Staff are friendly and helpful the majority of the time, and I enjoy teaching a new set of students almost every time I’m called in.”
