What is Hitch?

Hitch started out as an on-the-way ride-share service for long-haul drives. It promised to save money for riders, and provide both gas-money and company for people who were driving between popular — but distant — destinations.

However, it now also offers long-haul matching for people who simply want to drive for a living.

How it works

Got a long commute? Drivers can sign up here to be either a “going anyway” or a professional driver. Hitch says professional drivers are guaranteed hourly wages of $21 or more.

Both types of drivers will sign up and provide information about themselves and the vehicle they drive. The site will require that you provide identification and a Social Security number for a background check.

“Going Anyway” drivers then plug in the route that they’re planning to drive. The site will attempt to match them with up to three riders, who they can pick up at set locations. Naturally, you decide whether to accept a rider. And you know how much you’ll earn before you start.

Professional drivers

It’s less clear how this works for professional drivers, because Hitch doesn’t provide any specifics in its FAQs.

What the site does say is that if you sign up as a professional driver looking for round-trips, they’ll pay you by the hour, at least $22 per hour. You’re paid for the ride back, even if the site doesn’t schedule a rider for you.

Rides are scheduled up to 30 days in advance.

Hitch Review:

Hitch used to be just like Roadie, in that it was only a good deal for drivers if they happened to be going in the general direction anyway. However, as the app has expanded and become more sophisticated, it appears to offer a pretty good options for long-distance drivers.

Drivers say they typically earn over $100 per ride. And, if you’re a “going anyway” driver, that’s not half bad. It certainly would pay for your gas on a trip you’re already making.

The promised deal to professional drivers looks pretty good too. But we have yet to find someone who regularly works a “professional” driver shift with this app, so we don’t yet know whether the site’s promises are true. (The site’s terms emphasize that Hitch is a marketing platform, not a ride share company and not an employer. So, we’re not sure how drivers would be able to enforce the minimum pay promises.)

That said, the site only operates in a handful of cities in Texas, Florida and Oklahoma.

Good value for riders

The site offers a good value for riders too, particularly when compared with booking long rides with Uber or Lyft.

That Austin to Dallas trek, which takes about 3 hours, for instance, would cost hundreds with a normal ride share company. And it would cost a similar amount to fly. You’ll pay maybe half as much to hitch a ride with Hitch.

Driver Pay

Drivers are always told how much they’ll earn before accepting a ride. Pay is remitted to drivers within 2 to 3 days following the ride.

Recommendations

If you want to sign up with Hitch, you can do so here.

If you drive a lot in and around major cities, consider signing up with Carvertise and Wrapify. These sites will pay you to wrap your car with advertising and drive as usual.

For those with a truck, consider GoShare.   Amazon Flex is also a good choice for those with a large car or van.

Kids and pets

Those who don’t mind driving kids around (and can pass a thorough background check) should consider RideZum and Kango.

If you want to drive pets and furniture, CitizenShipper, which arranges on-the-way deliveries of furniture and pets is the best option. Truckers set their own rates and/or negotiate with the shipper. And the site has a nice tool to show other jobs that might be on your route.

What their drivers say (from Apple app store)

As a driver for Hitch, I really enjoy the convenience of being able to drive whenever I am traveling from College Station to any major cities in Texas. With this app, I am easily able to pick up rides to and from major cities that I am already going to regardless. It is an excellent tool for significantly reducing the cost of driving to a city. Additionally, you are able to put yourself down for times when you would like to drive so that you can be notified of pickups at that time. The app pays well and quickly when you cash out.

And here’s a YouTube about driving for Hitch.
