ExpressGoldCash is an online buyer of gold and jewelry, promising up to 98% of the spot price for bullion and up to 90% for jewelry.

How it works

ExpressGoldCash has an online form where you can request a free appraisal kit. This kit comes with FedEx packaging and tracking, as well as a list of FedEx locations near you where you can drop off your package. The kit also includes $5,000 in insurance coverage.

When the package is received by ExpressGoldCash, they’ll test the metal’s purity and make an offer to buy it. Offer’s are based on the type of product — i.e. coins, bars, or jewelry — purity, and the Gold spot price that day.

Estimating your payment

To get a rough idea of what your gold is worth, you can do a quick calculation based on what you know about your items.

Pure gold is 24 carat. So, if  you have 18-carat gold jewelry, it’s 75% gold and 25% some other metal. You’re paid only for the metal content. So assuming the spot price for gold that day is $1,500, they’d multiply that by 75% to get the item’s $1,125 current value. The site will offer up to 90% of that price.

If you accept the offer, ExpressGoldCash will pay you immediately by check, PayPal or direct deposit.

Gems

What if your gold jewelry is encrusted with gems? ExpressGoldCash is not a jeweler, so getting paid for a gem that’s not GIA certified is “tricky” here, according to a site representative. And, it’s unclear if you would get a good price for even GIA-certified stones.

Recommendations

If you have gold, this is appears to be a very good place to sell it. (You can get a ExpressGoldCash test kit here.) Alloy is another good option.

However, ExpressGoldCash is likely to melt the piece. So, there are better places to consider when selling attractive jewelry that includes valuable stones, including Circa Jewels, Worthy and local jewelers. Worthy and Circa re-sell vintage jewelry and, sometimes, sell gemstones to make new jewelry.

Notably, if the jewelry has a heavy gold content, but contains valuable stones, your best bet may be to separate the metal and gems and sell them separately. In these cases, it’s smart to contact a respectable local jeweler that can appraise your pieces and advise you about the best way to sell your particular item.
